Typical overnight babysitter and night nanny rate structures

General ranges for planning only, not authoritative data. Rates vary widely by location, experience, number of children, and duties.

  • Flat overnight fee

About $100 to $250 per night

Common for overnight babysitting when children usually sleep through. Awake hours are often paid hourly on top, and the fee rises with more children or a longer night.

  • Hourly for the whole shift

About $20 to $40 or more per hour

Typical for night nannies and newborn care, where the caregiver is awake with the baby for feeds and settling. Newborn care specialists often charge more.

  • Hybrid

Hourly awake time plus a sleep fee or reduced rate

Awake hours at the full rate, sleeping hours as a flat fee or reduced hourly rate (often about half), and wake-ups paid at the full rate.

How it works

Estimate overnight pay in five steps

  1. 1

    Describe the booking

Enter the number of nights, number of children, and any hourly add-on for each additional child.

  2. 2

    Set awake and sleeping hours

Enter the awake hourly rate, active hours per night, and sleeping hours per night.

  3. 3

    Choose how sleep is paid

Pick a flat overnight fee, a reduced hourly sleep rate, or the full hourly rate, then add expected wake-ups.

  4. 4

    Add overtime and extras

Enter hours already worked that week, the overtime threshold and multiplier, and any flat extras per night.

  5. 5

    Review and share the estimate

Check the itemized breakdown, per-night and multi-night totals, and effective hourly rate, then copy the summary.

The formulas

  • Awake rate = hourly rate + (children - 1) x add-on per child
  • Active pay = active hours x awake rate x nights
  • Wake-up hours = wake-ups x minutes / 60, paid at the awake rate
  • Sleep pay = flat fee x nights, or (sleeping hours - wake-up hours) x sleep rate x nights
  • Overtime premium = overtime hours x weighted hourly rate x (multiplier - 1)
  • Total = active + sleep + wake-up pay + overtime premium + extras
  • Effective hourly = total pay (without extras) / hours on site

Hours counted toward overtime are active hours, wake-up time, and hourly-paid sleep. Flat-fee sleep time is not counted. Bookings longer than 7 nights are split into 7-night workweeks, with hours already worked counted toward the first week.

Is sleep time paid? It depends on where you live

Whether sleeping hours must be paid, whether overtime applies, and which minimum wage covers the shift all vary by jurisdiction and by your agreement. Under US federal rules, for example, live-in domestic workers are treated differently from caregivers who do not live in the home, including how sleep time and overtime are handled. Many states and cities set stricter rules.

Use this tool as a planning estimate, not legal, tax, payroll, or employment advice. Put the pay method in a written agreement and confirm requirements with your state labor department or a payroll provider.

Common questions

Overnight babysitter and night nanny pay FAQ

How much do you pay an overnight babysitter?

Many families pay the sitter's usual hourly rate for awake hours, then either a flat overnight fee or a reduced hourly rate for sleeping hours. As a general range, flat overnight fees often fall around $100 to $250 per night, but rates vary widely by location, experience, and number of children.

Do you pay a babysitter while they sleep?

Usually yes, because the sitter must stay on site and respond to the children. Families often pay a flat fee or reduced rate for sleeping hours. Whether sleep time must be paid as hours worked depends on your jurisdiction, the arrangement, and whether the caregiver lives in.

How much does a night nanny cost?

Night nannies who care for newborns are typically awake for feeds and settling, so they usually charge hourly for the whole shift, often around $20 to $40 or more per hour, with newborn care specialists charging more. A 10-hour night commonly costs a few hundred dollars.

Is a flat overnight rate or hourly pay better?

A flat rate is simple and works when children sleep through. Hourly pay fits nights with frequent wake-ups or newborn care. A hybrid, hourly for awake time plus a sleep fee and paid wake-ups, is often the fairest way to match pay to the work.

How are wake-ups and overtime calculated?

Wake-up time is paid at the awake rate and, under hourly sleep pay, is taken out of sleeping hours so it is not paid twice. Overtime counts awake, wake-up, and hourly sleep time plus hours already worked that week, and pays a premium on hours above the threshold.
